Become a NESTigator!

Have you ever wondered what goes on in a bird’s nest? Do you want to contribute to meaningful research on urban biodiversity?

Consider joining NESTigators, a community-science research project that empowers volunteers to monitor urban bird nests. You can help us to understand how local birds are doing and what elements of a community-based science program contribute to meaningful interactions with nature in urban settings using interviews and questionnaires.

We are looking for research participants residing in the Metro Vancouver Region to apply by March 30th 2025.

What’s In It For You?

  • A chance to deepen your connection with nature and birds
  • Training on safely and ethically finding and observing bird nests
  • The joy of contributing to the conservation of Canadian birds while spending time outdoors.
  • Being part of a vibrant community of like-minded nature enthusiasts.
  • A really cool t-shirt and tote bag (and bonus bird conservation SWAG)!

How Can You Get Involved?

  • Apply to become a NESTigator by clicking this LINK or email nestigators.ires@ubc.ca for more information. Whether you’re an avid birder  or simply curious about the natural world around you, we’d love to have you on  board!

A brief word from the researcher:

Hi! My name is Sam Blackwell and I’m a Master’s student at the University of British Columbia. As a big fan of birds, I want to share the joy I’ve found in building relationships with Nature. My passion lies in understanding the best ways to connect people to Nature. I am leading this project to simultaneously contribute to a larger study on the nesting success of Canadian birds and to study the effect of bird nest observation on human-nature connections. The Principal Investigator is my supervisor, Professor and Canada Research Chair Kai Chan, who shares my passions and has been doing social-ecological research for decades.
